Veneto, in northeastern Italy, is one of Italy’s most eclectic wine regions. The wide range of terroir begins in the region’s Alpine foothills, extending to the warm Adriatic plains. Most folks know it for Valpolicella and Amarone; however, white wine occasionally plays an starring role, thanks to altitude, persistent Lake Garda breezes, and limestone‑rich soils giving vignerons the tools to make whites with both freshness and weight.
Not too long ago, Veneto whites meant easygoing Soave and oceans of crushable Pinot Grigio. Today, sustainable farming and low-intervention winemaking are leading the way to a new wave of these whites that are beautifully textured and genuinely terroir-driven.
Garganega is the classic white grape of Soave. It brings floral aromatics, ripe orchard fruit, and gentle almond notes, along with a naturally bright lift and a real knack for showing where it’s grown. Chardonnay steps in as the perfect blending partner, adding familiar apple‑and‑pear flavors and a touch of creaminess. The blend feels comfortably recognizable, yet remains distinctly Italian.
Scaia is a terrific entry-level project from the Castagnedi family of Tenuta Sant’Antonio in Valpolicella and Soave. The estate is one of the region’s benchmark producers thanks to their careful vineyard work and a modern, quality‑driven philosophy in the cellar. They farm limestone‑rich hillsides east of Verona, focusing on sustainability in the vineyard and low‑intervention winemaking techniques.
While Tenuta Sant’Antonio is well known for its rich expressions of Valpolicella and Amarone, many AWM customers may remember their easy-going Scaia Corvina. Scaia Garganega–Chardonnay channels that same easy-drinking energy. And to keep things clean and fresh, the 55-45 Garganega–Chardonnay blend is vinified entirely without oak influence.
In your glass, Scaia Garganega–Chardonnay offers friendly aromas of white blossoms, chamomile, and citrus, wrapped around ripe pear and apple. Garganega leads the way on the palate with bright, mouthwatering acidity and gentle almond notes. Chardonnay kicks in with a smooth, lightly creamy texture and familiar orchard‑fruit flesh. Hints of pineapple and soft tropical notes round out the mid‑palate without leaning into sweetness, keeping the focus on freshness and balance.
On the home turf in the Veneto, this silky blend slides in nicely alongside aperitivi and cicchetti, seafood or vegetable antipasti, herb‑driven pastas, vegetable risotti, and lighter fish dishes where you want an equal balance of lift and body. It starts to get fun when you push into more adventurous culinary territory. Try it with moderately spiced Mediterranean or Middle Eastern small plates, sushi, citrus-cured crudo, or fusion-inspired seafood dishes with gentle heat.
