This is the first year we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming Guillaume’s Le Mentor Gigondas to the AWM shelves. Gigondas sits just a few miles from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and the best reds from both villages produce lovely Grenache-led blends with superb depth and complexity.
Gigondas brings a slightly different vinous toolkit to the table. Vignerons here work with the slopes and wind of the Dentelles de Montmirail, more elevation, and a mix of rocky, limestone-influenced soils that nicely tighten things up to balance the sun-drenched fruit. It’s easy to see why the comparison to Châteauneuf makes total sense—similar grapes, similar sunny cadence; however, Gigondas is most often a touch firmer and more structured, with a pleasant mineral edge and a little extra lift.
In your glass, Le Mentor leans savory and grounded: dark cherry and ripe plum up front, then pepper, dried herbs, and that warm, iron-y backbone you get from great Rhône reds. Give it a little air, and you’ll love the emerging hints of black olive, fennel, and a subtle smoky note—more grill smoke than campfire. We’re talking classic Guillaume Gonnet here.
