Coteaux Bourguignons is a recent Burgundy AOC that makes a lot of sense, and will save some cash for savvy fans of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It was created to give vignerons more freedom and to offer wine lovers a delicious vinous experience without the big-name village price tag. It covers a wide swath of Burgundy from north to south. That broader geographic scope allows vignerons the creative freedom to blend across vineyard parcels and, more importantly, grape varieties—producing wines that carry the unmistakable vibe of Burgundy without the hefty price of village-appelated bottlings.
The usual backstory is that the Coteaux Bourguignons designation was established as an extension to where some of the venerable "basic" regional appellations left off, allowing more creative freedom for vignerons to experiment with a thoughtful, quality-focused mindset. I think it was actually more along the lines of "ok, we can't stop some Burgundy vignerons from sneaking Gamay into their wines, so let's just make it legal." Whatever the case, for us, it's one of those sweet-spot categories: wines grown in the same neck of the woods as the heavy hitters, made by the same folks, and yes, perhaps with a dash of Gamay here and there; however, with a price point you can pour generously without missing a car payment.
That's precisely where Vincent Bouzereau comes in. Vincent's family has deep, multi-generation roots in the Côte d'Or, and he's very much the definition of a hands-on Burgundian grower. Based in Meursault, he's just as comfortable coaxing character out of Pinot Noir as he is crafting his benchmark whites.
I first met Vincent close to ten years ago on a buying trip to Burgundy, and I've been a fan of his wines ever since. Vincent lights up when the talk turns to any of his single parcels, the age of his vines. or the subtle shifts of nuance from vintage to vintage in Burgundy. In Vincent's cellar, it's a highly disciplined, hands-off approach, while his time in the vineyard is essentially an exercise in patience. He really is the consummate Burgundy vigneron, and I believe I've felt that mindset in every bottle.
One of the things I've always appreciated about Vincent is that he doesn't treat his "entry-level" wines as second-class citizens. The same love and attention go into every harvest, the gentle handling of the fruit, and the choice of barrels or tanks in the cellar. The core philosophy is the same whether it's Grand Cru or Coteaux: clean, expressive fruit, thoughtful winemaking, and balance are the rules of the day. That's why I trust his labels so completely—if it says Bouzereau, I know I'm going to love it.
Ok, so you may have noticed that this particular label doesn't say "Bouzereau"... you would be correct in that assumption. The "Jehan Emonin" label—a nod to another part of Vincent's family—is a great example of how I can work with vignerons like Vincent to bring more value to AWM customers. Emonin is essentially a second label, but not in the "lesser wine" sense. In this case, like all of the "second label" wines I seek out for the shop, it's the exact wine as the primary Vincent Bouzereau label, just dressed in a different package for certain export markets. That allows me to land it at a much sharper price and pass that saving directly along to you, without sacrificing quality or authenticity. It's Burgundy by way of a back door—and that's exactly the kind of door I like to keep open.
While Coteaux Bourguignons can legally be a blend of grapes, this particular bottling, Vincent Bouzereau Coteaux Bourguignons Rouge, is 100% Pinot Noir, and that makes it a bit of a standout. What's really exciting is the source: it comes from some of Vincent's holdings in Volnay, specifically from the flatter parcels along the national road where the soils lean more heavily into clay. That combination gives the wine a deeper, rounder feel than you might expect at this price level—think ripe red cherries and wild strawberries, a touch of black tea and soft spice, with just enough structure to keep everything fresh.
In your glass, Vincent Bouzereau's Coteaux Bourguignons Pinot Noir opens with bright red fruits—wild strawberry, cherry, and raspberry—layered over a subtle earthy undertone that nods to its Volnay roots. A touch of dried herbs and floral lift keeps the nose lively. On the palate, ripe fruit gives way to a supple, rounded texture. Tannins are smooth, acidity is energetic, and the finish lingers with spice and minerality.
Vincent's Couteaux is my top pick for Thanksgiving this year. It has the brightness to pair with turkey, the depth to stand up to gravy, stuffing, and rich savory sides, and a juicy profile that won't clash with cranberry sauce or sweet potatoes. For a true Burgundy from a meticulous vigneron, at a Coteaux Bourguignons price, it's hard to imagine a better holiday red to stock up on.
