The Loire Valley, a region that meanders along the Loire River from the Atlantic coast near Nantes to the center of France near Orleans, is at the top of everyone’s travel list thanks to its breathtaking scenery, fairy-tale Châteaux, and, most notably, its incredible range of wines. These days, whites from the Loire are on fire with popularity, particularly those made from Sauvignon Blanc; however, the region’s red wines definitely warrant equivalent acclaim.
The region’s terroir is incredibly diverse, traversing a vast swath across middle France. The varying climates and soil types play a crucial role in producing exceptional red wines, shattering the monolithic perception that the region only excels in white varietals.
Château Montdomaine has a rich history spanning five centuries of family winemaking in the Middle Loire commune of Amboise. Frédéric Plou and his wife Louisa purchased Château Montdomaine in 2015, and they've worked tirelessly to revitalize their historic estate. This rebirth punctuates their unwavering commitment to preserving the estate's remarkable history while infusing it with contemporary vigor, aiming to produce the best terroir-driven wines.
The Plou family's foundational operating philosophy promotes complete harmony with nature. It emphasizes wine production that reflects the estate's unique terroir by adhering to traditional winemaking methods and clean, sustainable farming practices. In 2020, the Plou family embarked on their path toward organic certification, doubling down on their commendable commitment to environmental sustainability and transparency in their winemaking practices.
Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire's Touraine AOC is one of those "if you know, you know" wines. It deftly delivers that same cool, stony, high-tone profile we all love with Sancerre; however, without the now-standard Sancerre sticker shock.
Touraine sits just to the west in the Loire Valley, and growers there lean heavily into Sauvignon Blanc for their whites, so the style feels very familiar to Sancerre lovers: bright, focused, and food-friendly, with plenty of lift on the palate and way less lift on the wallet than the famous neighbors to the east on the Loire River.
Château Montdomaine's Callipyge is a prime example of what the Touraine can do with Sauvignon Blanc. Frédéric and Louisa focus on a clean, precise expression of Sauvignon Blanc that perfectly translates the terroir of the Touraine. It's crafted in a zero-oak straight-ahead style that keeps the varietal's clarity and the region's chalky snap in the center of the frame.
In your glass, Callipyge Sauvignon Blanc leans into a nice balance of orchard and citrus fruit. Notes of green apple, melon, and white peach melt into lemon zest with a very subtle nod to pink grapefruit. The clean, lively palate finishes with enough weight to handle richer dishes, and that balance makes it hugely versatile at the table. It'll pair beautifully with goat cheese, simple fish, shrimp, roast chicken, vegetable tarts, and all kinds of salads are easy wins.
For Thanksgiving, it definitely earns a front row seat. There's enough zip and verve to keep turkey, gravy, and dressing from feeling heavy, the subtle green notes echo herbs like sage and thyme, and the citrusy edge cuts everything from cranberry sauce to roasted squash.
