Cellier des Dauphins is a major name in the southern Rhône; however, it’s not a single estate in the Domaine or Château sense. It’s an extensive union of Côtes du Rhône vignerons, bringing together local cooperatives and literally thousands of family growers across the region. The idea was to connect wine lovers across France with genuine village agriculture. Fortunately for us, they also export this generous, easygoing Rhône red!
The union traces its modern origins to the mid-1960s, when growers in the southern Rhône began working together to pool resources for winemaking, bottling, and distribution. That model is the key in a region where many families farm modest vineyard parcels that would be impossible to bottle and market on their own. Working collectively, they can protect village-level farming while reaching a wider audience. Today, Cellier des Dauphins is one of the Rhône’s largest producers, with vineyards across twenty different southern Rhône appellations.
There’s a very French-café-bistro vibe running through their wines. The southern Rhône has long supplied reds that work naturally with everyday bistro fare. Les Dauphins leans directly into that kind of bistro feel, and its a Côtes du Rhône that’ll feel right with a chalkboard menu, or an afternoon at the pool—don’t forget the quick chill!
I love that the cooperative has also put meaningful effort into farming and sustainability. Cellier des Dauphins has promoted sustainable agriculture through HVE certification, waste reduction, eco-design, wastewater treatment, and solar energy across the entire co-op. They were also early adopters of organic viticulture in the Rhône, with a dedicated organic range alongside their traditional bottlings.
Les Dauphins Côtes du Rhône Réserve is classic southern Rhône in a friendly but nicely polished style. In your glass, bright garnet color leads to notes of cherry, plum, black raspberry, gentle spice, and a whisper of red licorice. The medium to full-bodied palate features ripe fruit, soft tannins, and enough lift to keep things fresh.
For classic pairings, think grilled lamb chops with herbes de Provence, sausage and lentils, cassoulet, steak-frites, ratatouille, roast chicken, or a good charcuterie board. It also works well with burgers, pizza with spicy cured meats, barbecue pork ribs, or Korean-style grilled short ribs. The wine’s ripe fruit can handle a little sweetness or smoke, while the soft tannins make it suitable for grilled white meats and poultry. It’s a satisfying southern Rhône red for sipping on a Tuesday night, at a weekend cookout, or over a casual French-inspired meal at home.
