Ribera del Duero sits on a high plateau that runs along the Duero River in Castilla y León. Summers here are brutally hot, and winters can be unforgiving; however, the vines manage the extremes very nicely thanks to the region’s dramatic day–night temperature swings. As the Duero River winds through Ribera, it leaves behind an ever-shifting mix of limestone, clay, sand, and gravel on its banks, giving each village along its route its own signature terroir.
Wine laws here require at least 75% Tempranillo in red blends; however, most producers bottle without blending. Winemaking in Ribera is an eclectic mix of tradition and modern innovation. In the cellar, you’ll find everything from minimal‑oak, fruit‑forward styles to long‑aged, structured bottlings, and just about everything in between.
Bodegas y Viñedos Tábula sits on a 22‑hectare estate between the villages of Olivares and Valbuena de Duero, on Ribera’s famous “Golden Mile.” The winery was created in 2002 by Valladolid entrepreneur José Luis Muñoz, with the mission to respect the fruit, express the terroir, and, above all, produce wines focused on quality rather than volume.
Damana 5 is made from 100% Tempranillo sourced from the estate’s younger vine parcels. The fruit is hand‑harvested and fermented in stainless steel, followed by a five-month rest in oak, which gives the wine its name. That short time in barrel beautifully rounds out all the rough edges without stepping on the fruit Tábula works so hard to preserve. It's a sweet spot between easygoing and serious Ribera: structured enough for the table, and easygoing enough to enjoy a glass on its own.
In your glass, the deep red color leads to aromas of red raspberry and dark cherry framed by subtle spice and just the right amount of oak influence. The subtle spice lingers nicely throughout the mid-palate and finishes with savory plum and easygoing tannins.
Damana 5 is right at home pairing with Castilian classics like roasted lamb, grilled pork chops, and grilled sausages. It also pairs like a dream with simple fare like herb‑roasted chicken, lentils with chorizo, and, of course, Manchego. Try it with more creative pairings, like grilled tuna steaks with smoky romesco, wood‑fired pizza with wild mushrooms and jamón serrano, or a black‑bean burger with roasted peppers and paprika aioli. Tomato‑based pastas and light‑on‑the‑heat Tex‑Mex dishes also fall neatly into its wheelhouse.
