Sardinia's a rugged, sea-wrapped island where wind, elevation, and lean, rocky soils shape its super-tasty wines. There's a wealth of terroir that stretches from the granite in the central highlands to limestone in the south. The steady sun and bountiful breezes combine to manage heat, perfect conditions for retaining freshness in the islands' reds and whites. Wine culture runs deep here, layered with Phoenician, Roman, and Spanish influence, but the results are distinctly Sardinian: independent, site-driven, and built to last.
Cannonau is Sardinia's local take on Grenache, and here the grape speaks with a distinct Sardinian accent, while retaining the grape's inherent generosity of fruit. The Mistral winds and scrubby terrain—rosemary, myrtle, thyme—help lean it in the direction of more savory tones.
Cannonay is also part of the "Blue Zone" conversation. Sardinia's known for its long-lived communities with remarkably high numbers of centenarians. Cannonau appears daily at the Sardinean table, and while it's not exactly the magic bullet of health and longevity, it is a part of a broader food, family, exercise, and reduced stress rhythm that's hard to ignore.
The Argiolas estate is a foundational participant in Sardinia's modern wine culture. Founded by Antoni Argiolas in the mid-1900s and based near Serdiana in the south, the family was instrumental in the efforts to move the region's wine production from rustic to refined. Thanks to the lessons learned from generations of family farming and their meticulous vineyard management, they've earned a reputation for producing some of Sardinia's finest terroir-driven wines.
The family's Costera Cannonau is a perfect introduction to Sardinian Grenache. Compared to Grenache for the Southern Rhône Valley, Costera leans well into more savory notes, with a saline edge and wild herbs detailing the finish. When compared to Spanish Garnacha, it's less flashy and fleshy fruit and more about savory red fruit, spice, and Mediterranean herbs. If you're already a fan of Grenache/Garnacha, Cannonau is parked right in your wheelhouse.
In your glass, Argiolas Costera Cannonau features notes of red cherry, pomegranate, and just-ripe plum, with a thread of blood orange and fennel seed. There's a lovely beam of warm spice, with a nod to bay leaf and thyme, leading to nice minerality that lingers on the finish.
For an authentic Sardinian food pairing experience, enjoy grilled lamb with rosemary, malloreddus (tiny hand-rolled semolina gnocchi) with tomato-saffron-sausage ragù, and Pecorino Sardo. Off-island, it's terrific with dry-spice-rubbed pork shoulder, lamb burgers, or sausage and roasted peppers. It also handles smoke like a champ—try it with grilled chicken thighs, paprika-rubbed grilled root veggies, or grilled eggplant with tahini and herbs.
